Origins and influences

Mahusetan culture was not designed; it accumulated. It draws on those of the Confederation's patres patriae, the Netherlands and England; on other micronations, among them Abelden, Radon, Slin, Hasanistan, Brennonia, Nedland and the wider MicroWikia community; and on internet, meme and anime culture.

The founders were three members of Generation Z, and meme culture has been part of the state throughout, marked by political incorrectness and a heavy debt to the anonymous imageboards. Mahusetball, a local variant of Polandball, is in regular use; a bill to make Dat Boi the national meme was defeated.

Borrowed material tends to acquire an office. The Institute of Otaku Culture became the Institute of Anime and Manga in 2018, and was folded with eleven others into the Mahusetan National University in 2022. A Meme Warfare Centre has sat within the Cyber Force since 2019, charged with countering disinformation about the Confederation.

National symbols

The register was reshuffled in July 2026 and now carries twenty-five designations. The sausage roll is the national dish, replacing cifa, the potato gratin codified under the kingdom. At table it is joined by walnut bread, extra-mature North Holland Gouda as national cheese, the Oreo as national biscuit, honey salmiakki liquorice as national sweet and iced tea as national drink.

From the land come the redcurrant, the potato, rye and buckwheat, kale and sambal. Cats are the national animal, the calico the national cat colouring, the Frisian stabijhoun the national dog breed. The European robin, the three-spined stickleback and the European honeybee follow, with the snowdrop as national flower and the European alder as national tree.

Moissanite is the national mineral, cycling the national exercise, dabbing the national dance, and the yoghurt bacterium Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus the national microbe. Paracetamol is the national medicine; the register's compilers noted, without evident irony, that the remedy also assists in maintaining a list of this length.

Entries are struck as well as added: the Driekusman folk dance, the ruby and sandstone lost official standing in December 2021. The national anthem is Land of Hope and Glory and the motto Liberty, Virtue and Competent Government. The Confederation these represent is described in the overview. Virgo took "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" as its territorial anthem.

Flag and heraldry

The national flag is purple, gold and red: web colours #3D0027, #FEDD00 and #990000. Its proportions and colours were defined only later, so designs once legitimate no longer are. Variants exist for the Dutch community and for K9 veterans.

The Lazian Chamber adopted the present coat of arms on 11 June 2023, at the sitting that granted Chris Ramsay the title of Chad for his heraldic work. Arms and flags are registered by the Mahusetan College of Arms, so named in 2022, and by the Institute of Vexillology.

Both answer to the Office for Architecture and Design, created in September 2025 within the Ministry for General Affairs, which also advises on ceremonial insignia and on architectural standards for public buildings.

Public holidays

Ten public holidays were formalised in January 2019, and an eleventh was added in 2026. The original calendar ran: New Year's Day, Independence Day, Valentine's Day, Good Friday, Easter, Liberation Day, Mahuset Day, Flag Day, Constitution Day and King's Day. Proposals to add Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha were voted down later the same month.

Mahuset Day is the national day, kept on 29 May for the proclamation of 2012. King's Day, observed while the head of state held that title, survives under the name Chad Lord-Stadtholder-Emeritus Day and is marked in September.

Animals in office

The Chief Mouser Act of 2016 gave titles to the resident animals of government agencies: Balloe as Chief Dogger to the Executive Office, Kitty as Chief Mouser, Terry and Thor as Lord-Mousers. Balloe, latterly Chief Doggo, served until his death in 2023.

In May 2026 the Chadly Chancery granted cats in public office the style Gentlenyan, Dutch edelnyan, citing "the longstanding and distinguished participation of cats in the civic and emotional life of the Confederation". The same decree made the birthday of Thor, Lord-Mouser to the Executive Office, a national holiday.

Religion and secularism

The Confederation is religiously diverse and politically secular. The 2023 census recorded 63.6 per cent of citizens as irreligious and 18.2 per cent as Sunni Muslim, the remainder divided evenly between Catholics and Protestants. The Interim Constitution names the "Judaeo-Christian tradition and western secular humanist culture" among the things it protects.

The office of Patron Saint lost its legal status in December 2021, the matter left to religious institutions.

Language and pronunciation

Two languages carry the business of the state. The 2022 census put English as the first language of 63.6 per cent of citizens and Dutch as that of the rest. Hasani and Turkish were recognised as minority languages in November 2021, an acknowledgement of the Turkic strand in Mahusetan life and of long ties with Hasanistan.

Esperanto is an official language of Matsia. It lost that status when the co-founder XO left in 2019 and the National Convention stripped contested elements out of Matsian policy; it was restored in May 2020.

The etymology is unsettled. Beside the usual reading of the name as a portmanteau of two predecessor kingdoms, a less widely accepted account derives it from "muh", internet slang for "my", and huset, the word for "the house" in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian.

The name has never acquired a settled pronunciation either. Ten are on record, and as a non-native English word it is left to the reader. In January 2019 the Institute of Linguistics opened an international form inviting submissions, its object being to compile as many as possible; the body is now the Joint Vetrisphere Linguistics Institute.

Press and broadcasting

State media belong to the Publieke Omroep Stichting, the broadcasting foundation set up in 2021. It owns the Courant van Lazia, the newspaper of record, with the Mahusetan Broadcasting Service, the Lazian Newswire and Kompasstad's Weekly Briefing. Independent publishing has fared less well: Bleu Ultramarine SM launched in 2018, published two articles and fell dormant.

Film, television and games are classified by Contentwatch, under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Science, which in 2026 rated Bee Movie 18. Much of the Confederation's cultural and intellectual life takes place on its Discord server.
